Lakhvinder Kumar, a gangster linked to the notorious Lawrence Bishnoi gang, was pulled off a U.S. flight and flown back to Delhi on Friday. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said the 28‑year‑old was taken into custody by Haryana Police as soon as he landed.
Kumar faces dozens of serious charges in Haryana, including extortion, intimidation, illegal firearms possession and an attempted murder case. In order to bring him home, Haryana Police asked the CBI to seek help from Interpol. The CBI issued a Red‑Corner Notice, which is shared worldwide with police forces to track wanted fugitives.
The deportation was a joint effort between the CBI, the Ministry of External Affairs and the Ministry of Home Affairs. Thanks to the coordination, the gangster was removed from the United States and arrived in India on October 25. The Red‑Corner Notice was published through Interpol on October 26, 2024, at Haryana Police’s request.
India’s National Central Bureau for Interpol, known as Bharatpol, works with police across the country to use these notices. Over the past few years, the CBI and its partners have helped recover more than 130 wanted criminals, bolstering the fight against organized crime.
Last month, the same team managed to bring back Mainpal Dhilla, alias Sonu Kumar, from Cambodia. Dhilla was already serving a life sentence for murder, attempted murder and firearms offences. The successful return of both fugitives highlights the growing strength of Indian law‑enforcement cooperation with international agencies.
