‘Leadership must go’: Veerappa Moily blames Cong high command’s negligence for K’taka crisis (IANS Exclusive)

On Friday, senior Congress figure M. Veerappa Moily told LatestNewsX that the party’s top leadership should consider stepping aside, holding the high command directly responsible for the turmoil in Karnataka. He said the crisis was not a surprise but the result of “prolonged negligence” that allowed a simmering dispute to blow up. According to Moily, the leadership should have seen the “last two and a half years” of growing friction and put in place mechanisms to keep matters from spiralling into a stalemate. He argued that the elected leaders at both the state level and the high‑command level failed to anticipate these developments, and their inaction let the conflict widen. “The leaders of the Congress who are in responsible positions, and also our high command representatives, should have foreseen these developments,” he added. Moily called for an internal reckoning, insisting that discipline and coordination within the Karnataka unit be restored and that those in charge be accountable—not just the individual leaders. He warned that the failure to manage expectations and ensure a seamless handover had pushed the party to a breaking point. “If at all the arrangement had to be fulfilled, the will of the high command must prevail. There should have been a proper, smooth transition. Instead, you allowed this to come to a climax, and the fire has reached a stage where it cannot be extinguished,” he remarked. The former minister urged that the party put itself together before the internal strife destroys its once‑promising prospects in the state, noting that the period of internal discord is jeopardising the Congress’s political future in Karnataka.
