Jaipur, Nov 26 (LatestNewsX) – A leopard has once again drawn attention to the city, this time intruding on Vidyadhar Nagar. Late on Tuesday night the big cat slipped into Sector 10 and, according to reports, struck a calf in the early hours. Residents found the dead animal in the morning, immediately called the Forest Department, and the situation was passed on to the proper authorities.
One local described what happened: “Around 2 a.m., dogs were barking loudly. When I checked, everything seemed normal, so I went back to sleep. In the morning, we found the calf dead in the temple garden. The leopard had killed the calf.” The report was shared straight away with the officials.
After fresh paw prints were discovered, a search was launched. This marks the second major leopard occurrence in Jaipur within a span of six days. On November 20, a leopard slipped into the high‑security Civil Lines area, scuttled past the former Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot’s residence, and then entered Cabinet Minister Suresh Rawat’s bungalow. The animal later entered a school and was tranquilised after several hours by a team of more than 30 personnel, owing to the tight‑knit neighbourhood. It was finally calmed in a house on Lane No. 6 around 11 a.m., after which crews began preparing to move it to the Jhalana Reserve.
Vidyadhar Nagar has seen several sightings. In June a leopard was spotted on rooftops in Sector 8, and last December another entered a central government guest house before darting through residential lanes for almost four hours before being captured.
Across the city, so far leopards have been spotted in places such as Civil Lines, Vidyadhar Nagar, Durgapura, Gopalpura, Jaisinghpura, Jagatpura, Malviya Nagar Industrial Area and Kho Nagorian. Forest officials say the uptick in movements is linked to shrinking prey populations in nearby forests, forcing leopards to venture closer to human settlements. The situation poses serious challenges for both the Forest Department and local police.
Wildlife specialists point to limited habitat and scarce prey as key factors driving leopards nearer to town. Arc/svn
