Srinagar—The train service that connects Banihal with Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir stopped this Saturday when an eagle struck the front windshield of the locomotive. The impact caused a brief injury to the loco pilot, Vishal, who was treated with first aid at Anantnag station. He is now safe, and the train has been halted to guarantee passenger security.
Railway officials confirmed that the bird strike happened while the train ran between Bijbehara and Anantnag stations. They are inspecting the locomotive carefully before allowing it to resume its journey. Security staff have taken all precautionary steps to protect travelers.
At present, the route uses the high‑speed Vande Bharat train that runs from Katra station in Reasi district to the Kashmir Valley. Meanwhile, work is underway at Jammu railway station to upgrade tracks, platforms and other facilities. Officials say the redevelopment will finish by the end of the month, after which a new direct link between Jammu and the Valley will likely launch.
The Kashmir rail project is the most ambitious in Indian rail history. The Udhampur‑Srinagar‑Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) spans 272 km and features 36 tunnels and 943 bridges, delivering all‑weather connectivity and boosting local economies. Highlights include the Chenab Railway Bridge, the world’s tallest railway bridge that outshines the Eiffel Tower, and the Anji Khad Bridge, the country’s first cable‑stayed railway bridge.
