New Delhi: The Lok Sabha will hold a key debate today on the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and broader electoral reforms, after months of stalemate stalled the agenda. Following intensive talks between the government and opposition, a week‑long impasse was broken when, on Tuesday, an all‑party pact was reached to bring the matter before both houses. As decided in a meeting chaired by Speaker Om Birla, a full discussion of electoral changes will take place on December 9, reflecting the opposition’s insistence on a structured review of the SIR process.
The dispute over SIR—claimed by the opposition to have disenfranchised marginalised communities—has triggered heated exchanges and disruptions since the Winter Session began on December 1. The Lok Sabha is also set to resume the debate that the opposition has been urging since the opening day of the session. Rahul Gandhi will lead the opposition’s remarks, with Meghwal scheduled to respond on Wednesday.
This debate comes after repeated protests by senior opposition leaders such as Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi, who staged demonstrations inside and outside Parliament, holding placards stating “Stop SIR – Stop Vote Chori.” Minister Kiren Rijiju confirmed the schedule on X, noting that the Vande Mataram 150th‑anniversary talk and the electoral‑reform agenda were finalized during the all‑party meeting.
