LoP Adhikari accuses Bengal Police of releasing Trinamool Councillor held with firearms without probe

In Kolkata, a top BJP leader has slammed West Bengal police for letting a Trinamool Congress councillor walk free after catching him with ammunition at the airport. Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, called out the quick release of Sheikh Aminul Islam, a councillor from Pujali in South 24 Parganas district.

The drama unfolded on Sunday afternoon at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport. CISF officers stopped Islam as he prepared to board a flight to Mumbai. They found a gun magazine and six rounds of 7.65 mm cartridges in his luggage. When questioned, Islam couldn’t explain why he had the items or show any legal permission to carry them. The CISF detained him briefly before handing him over to the local airport police station that evening.

But by Monday, Bidhannagar City Police—responsible for the airport area—had released Islam without digging deeper into the case, Adhikari said in a sharp statement. “What was Aminul Islam planning? Smuggling weapons across states? Or trying to hijack the airplane?” Adhikari asked. He even tied it to the councillor’s links with TMC leaders, noting family members involved in past gold smuggling scandals. “He thought he could get away with smuggling firearms too—and he wasn’t wrong! The Mamata Police released him,” Adhikari added.

Adhikari didn’t hold back on the blame. He accused Bidhannagar Police Commissioner Mukesh of following direct orders from West Bengal’s Director General of Police, Rajeev Kumar, who in turn takes cues from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. “That’s why the TMC councillor got off the hook after such a serious offense,” the BJP leader claimed.

To push for answers, Adhikari urged CISF Director General Praveer Ranjan to release video footage of Islam’s detention. He wants West Bengal residents to see the “reckless behavior” of the Bidhannagar Police and their motives. Adhikari also called on Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan to step in, demanding a report from the state government on why authorities ignored this major security lapse at a key international airport like Kolkata’s.
