In Kerala, the Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan is pushing hard for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into a massive GST scam that’s allegedly cost the state over Rs 1,100 crore. He claims one organized group pulled off the fraud by sneaking fake registrations using everyday people’s names without their knowledge.
Satheesan spoke to reporters in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday, explaining how the scammers collected GST payments but funneled the money through their own accounts instead of the government’s treasury. Pune’s intelligence team first spotted the issue, but so far, the Kerala government has only canceled those bogus registrations—no deeper action.
“The state has already lost Rs 200 crore that should have gone to the treasury, and we haven’t recovered a single rupee,” Satheesan said. He pointed out that many victims aren’t even income taxpayers, yet they’re now facing tax notices from income tax authorities because fraudsters used their PAN cards and Aadhaar details for huge transactions. Worse, the government hasn’t even warned these people about the mess they’re in.
Satheesan dropped a bombshell: unofficial reports hint at around 1,000 similar GST frauds happening right now across Kerala. He slammed the GST system for weak oversight, calling it more than just tax evasion—it’s outright data theft. “Some GST officials are teaming up with these crooks,” he alleged, urging a full CBI investigation to dig deep and bring everyone involved to justice.
He accused the state government of trying to shield its own officials from scrutiny, insisting only an independent probe can fix the damage and rebuild trust in Kerala’s GST administration. This demand is ramping up political heat on the ruling party, spotlighting big gaps in how the state handles tax fraud and data security.
