Kristy Coventry outlines IOC reform agenda, cautions on Esports and gender policies

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is taking a step back to rethink two big issues—Esports and how it handles transgender women in the female category. CIO President Kirsty Coventry said the organization is in a “Pause and Reflect” mode, looking at how to move forward in a fair and inclusive way.
Coventry began her tenure in June with a “Fit for the Future” plan. “We paused to listen and learn,” she told Xinhua reporters while visiting China. “Everyone on the team needs to feel they’re succeeding, so we’re gathering ideas from all sides.”
To guide the discussion, the IOC has set up four working groups. They cover the Youth Olympic Games, the Olympic program, commercial partnerships, and crucially, the protection of the female category. The transgender matter is under a dedicated scientist team that will decide the rules for future competitions.
The Esports debate is also getting close attention. Coventry explained that a small internal group is reviewing how the IOC could enter the Esports arena responsibly. “We need to be clear on what is fair,” she said. “It’s new territory for us, and we’re still figuring out whether we want purely sports‑themed games.”
The IOC’s partnership with Saudi Arabia’s Olympic and Paralympic Committee, and the Esports World Cup Foundation, has ended. The decision came after both sides agreed they needed to re‑evaluate the plan. “There is huge potential,” Coventry added, “but the details are still unsettled.”
In short, the IOC is busy listening to experts, reviewing the inclusion of Esports, and protecting the female category while deciding how to balance growth with fairness. The organization invites viewers to stay tuned for updates from the working groups and the scientific reviews that will shape the next steps in Olympic sports.
