Women’s World Cup: India-South Africa final is a good thing for women’s cricket, says Harmanpreet Kaur

In a sunny crowd at Navi Mumbai on Saturday, India’s women’s captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, celebrated a historic moment: her team will face South Africa in the final of the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup. She said the clash breaks a long‐standing streak by Australia and England, who have won 11 of the 12 tournaments since 1973.

Kaur, 36, bragged that the excitement is contagious. “It’s great to see two different teams in the final,” she told reporters. “I love the energy and the pressure over tickets…”

The final comes at home for India, just as in 2017 when the team reached the World Cup showdown. Kaur added that the 2017 run spurred a surge of interest in women’s cricket across the country. “After that final, a lot of girls started playing, and we saw big changes in domestic cricket,” she said. “If we win again, we’ll see even more support and viewership.”

India’s journey to the final was not smooth. The team lost three matches in the group stage, but Kaur praised her squad’s morale. “We didn’t let the losses shake us,” she said. “Everyone stayed united and kept the goal in mind.” She highlighted resilience and learning from every defeat.

South Africa opened well, long‑range shots and a strong bowling lineup. Kaur noted their comeback ability, calling it “outstanding” and “balanced.” She believes the match will be a test of mental and physical strength for both teams.

Fans across India are already buying tickets. “Ticket demand shows how much the fans love cricket,” Kaur said. “It’s a sign of the growing popularity of women’s cricket.”

For India, a triumph in the 2025 World Cup would be historic. Only New Zealand has ever beaten both Australia and England in the tournament, and this could be the first title for another nation.

The final is set for Sunday. Wherever you’re watching, expect a thrilling showdown that could reshape the future of women’s cricket in India and beyond.
