Mumbai, Nov 12 – The Maharashtra Anti‑Terrorism Squad (ATS) raided the home of a local teacher, Ibrahim Abidi, in the Kausa area of Thane district. Police believe Abidi was linked to Al‑Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS).
Abidi, who rents a house in Mumbra Kausa, also teaches Urdu at a mosque in Kurla every Sunday. The ATS searched his second wife’s residence in Kurla, suspecting that he might be encouraging children to adopt extremist views. During the raids, investigators seized several electronic devices that are now being tested for any ties to terrorist networks.
“This search is part of the wider probe into the Pune AQIS case, where a software engineer was arrested for links to the banned group,” said a spokesperson for the Maharashtra ATS. The Pune investigation already uncovered suspicious literature and digital records from the accused.
Earlier, the ATS had detained Zubair Ilyas Hungargekar in Pune on allegations of promoting jihad for AQIS and endangering national security. After a car blast in Delhi, security forces nationwide have heightened alert levels. Sensible checkpoints have been tightened and surveillance teams are on the lookout for any new threats.
In related news, the Gujarat ATS arrested three suspects in Ahmedabad on November 9. They were linked to the Islamic State (ISIS) and were accused of planning terror attacks across India. Officials name the trio as Ahmed Mohiuddin Syed, Mohammad Suhel and Azad, who had been under observation for about a year. The group was reportedly trading weapons and targeting multiple sites. Investigations are ongoing to uncover further plans and collaborators.
A day later, on November 10, Azad was identified as a resident of Jhinjhana town in Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli district. His family denied any knowledge of his alleged activities and called for a fair, transparent investigation.
These arrests underscore how Maharashtra and Gujarat authorities are working together to crack down on terrorist networks from Al‑Qaeda to ISIS. The agencies remain alert as they pursue a broader mission to keep the country safe from extremist threats.
