The Supreme Court will take up the bail requests of student leaders Umar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam, Gulfisha Fatima and other activists on Tuesday. The four men are still locked up under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, or UAPA.
According to the court’s online caselist, a bench led by Justices Aravind Kumar and N.V. Anjaria will hear Delhi Police lawyers on November 18. The police are arguing against the bail pleas, claiming that Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam planned and coordinated the 2020 Delhi riots, especially the violent clashes in North‑East Delhi.
Delhi Police filed a detailed counter‑affidavit at the Supreme Court. The document cites chat messages, witness statements and call logs from December 2019 that show Khalid as a “key conspirator” and a mentor who rallied students, mapped protest sites, and organized the riots. The police say the plan was set to coincide with US President Donald Trump’s visit to India, hoping to grab international media attention and spin the controversy around the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) into a global story about a “pogrom” against Muslims.
The affidavit labels Sharjeel Imam a “top conspirator” under Khalid’s guidance. It says he orchestrated the first phase of the riots between December 13 and 20, 2019.
Earlier, the Delhi High Court denied bail to the same activists in this “larger conspiracy” case tied to the 2020 Delhi riots. The Supreme Court’s hearing could change the outcome, but for now, Khalid, Imam, Fatima and other defendants remain in prison under the strict UAPA provisions.
