In Mumbai, a new initiative announced on October 10 aims to boost reading habits and keep the Marathi language alive. The Maharashtra state government has decided to mark October 15, the birth anniversary of former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, as Reading Inspiration Day.
The plan is simple: encourage people of all ages to pick up books and explore ideas beyond everyday life. “Let’s move forward and make Marathi the language of knowledge,” the government said, a phrase that will echo through every activity this year.
All state ministries, government and semi‑government offices, public institutions, and district collector’s offices have pledged to host a variety of events. These will be held both online and in person, so everyone can join in whether they’re at home or in the community.
On this Reading Inspiration Day, the focus isn’t limited to classic literature. The program will also highlight science, technology, management, the environment, health, computer science, and even space science. Workshops will teach writing skills—from translation and professional copy to e‑books and self‑publishing—alongside coding and short film production. Participants can expect lectures, seminars, group discussions, book fairs, and a special Marathi “Vachan Katta” exhibition. Live virtual literary conferences in Marathi will also bring authors and readers together.
To reach more people, the government will highlight Marathi’s role in legal proceedings, government work, media, and daily transactions. Literal newspapers, court reports, and government notices will increasingly use Marathi to strengthen its presence in everyday life.
The project will partner with key literary bodies such as the Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad, Marathwada Sahitya Parishad, Vidarbha Sangh, Konkan Marathi Sahitya Parishad, Dakshin Maharashtra Sahitya Sabha, and the Mumbai Marathi Sahitya Sangh. Libraries, colleges, technical institutes, and diploma schools will all host reading‑promoting events. Local municipal bodies will also take part, according to Dr. Kiran Kulkarni, Secretary of the Marathi Language Department.
By combining book‑lofted celebrations with practical reading workshops, Maharashtra’s Reading Inspiration Day seeks to spark curiosity, build a stronger reading community, and keep Marathi as a living, breathing language for the future.
