Maharashtra Leads India in Reliable Power Supply: Mahavitaran Tops REC Rankings
Mumbai’s power scene just got a big thumbs up! Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who oversees the Energy Department, announced on Thursday that the state-run electricity company Mahavitaran has clinched the top spot in India for reliable power supply. It scored an impressive 93 out of 100, putting Maharashtra ahead of the pack.
Fadnavis shared the exciting news, highlighting how this ranking sets fresh standards in reliable power supply, financial health, and the shift to cleaner energy. "REC evaluated Mahavitaran on key areas like ease of living and doing business, financial stability of power companies, energy transition, and regulatory governance," he said. This top ranking from REC—a Maharatna company under the Government of India—and the Power Foundation of India confirms Maharashtra’s energy sector is on a strong growth path.
The Chief Minister didn’t hold back on the praise. He congratulated everyone involved—from field workers and engineers to officers, boards of directors, and even non-conventional energy teams—for delivering customer-focused, top-quality services. "A big shoutout to electricity consumers too—their trust keeps us going," Fadnavis added. He emphasized that this achievement shows Maharashtra’s power system is moving forward with confidence.
Diving into the details, Maharashtra earned an ‘A’ category rating with that stellar 93-point score. It beat out Western region rivals like Gujarat, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli-Diu, and Daman across all criteria. Here’s the breakdown: 32 points for power supply reliability, 25 for financial viability in distribution, 17 for ease of living and doing business, 15 for energy transition adaptability, and 5 for regulatory governance.
Looking ahead, Fadnavis revealed Maharashtra’s ambitious plans for electricity demand up to 2035. The state currently boasts an installed capacity of 42,000 MW, and it aims to add another 45,000 MW in the next five years, pushing the total to 87,000 MW. This forward-thinking strategy has also earned Maharashtra the number one spot among states for long-term energy planning.
Energy Department sources shared more green initiatives: Maharashtra targets 52% of its energy from renewable sources by 2030. Plus, the state is rolling out daytime 100% electricity for farmers via 16,000 MW solar projects, set to finish by December 2026. REC’s rating gives a nod to these efforts, boosting Maharashtra’s push for sustainable power.
With reliable electricity, green energy plans, and top rankings, Maharashtra is lighting the way for India’s energy future.
