Major overhaul in Tamil Nadu’s land mapping process soon

Chennai, Dec 4 (LatestNewsX) – Tamil Nadu is gearing up for a sweeping overhaul of how land is surveyed, mapped and recorded. The Directorate of Survey and Settlement has launched a process to purchase high‑resolution satellite imagery (HRSI) for the entire state in hopes of modernising land‑records, speeding up dispute resolution and increasing transparency.

A request for proposals is now out to build a comprehensive HRSI database that will cover roughly 1.3 lakh sq km. This database will become the heart of a statewide digital‑mapping ecosystem that will support anything from governance and planning to everyday citizen services.

When the new imagery is in hand, it will be merged with the Tamil‑Nadu Geographical Information System (TNGIS), letting officials overlay the fresh visuals onto existing land records. This integration will make it easier to spot discrepancies between old survey boundaries and what’s actually on the ground, even down to minor shifts that usually spark protracted legal battles.

Officials say the upgrade will streamline a range of processes – from patta transfer and subdivision approvals to land‑reclassification. It should also help spot encroachments on public land, water bodies and government assets. With clearer images that reveal small‑scale intrusions, enforcement agencies can act sooner and with stronger evidence.

Beyond dispute resolution, the database will aid departments involved in infrastructure development, environmental monitoring, disaster planning and welfare program implementation. The initiative fits into the broader push toward digital governance and integrated land management across the state.

Tamil Nadu has upgraded many aspects of its land administration over time, but the lack of up‑to‑date, high‑precision imagery has long been a bottleneck. Once this satellite‑based platform is live, it is expected to deliver a unified, transparent and scientifically sound foundation for land‑related decisions.

This move marks a significant step toward eliminating ambiguity around property boundaries, boosting the efficiency of land surveys and cutting the disputes that often delay projects for individuals and government alike.

By adopting advanced satellite technology, Tamil Nadu aims to create a reliable land information system that serves citizens, planners and administrators alike.
