Delhi High Court Upholds Termination of DU Professor for Demanding Bribe from Students
In a strong move to protect academic integrity, the Delhi High Court has turned down a plea from a former Delhi University professor who was sacked for asking students for bribes to boost their attendance and marks. The court made it clear that such corrupt practices are a serious blow to the heart of education.
The professor in question, Thelma J. Talloo, was once a reader in the Commerce Department at Jesus and Mary College, part of Delhi University. Back in 2008, students filed complaints against her, leading to an inquiry. This resulted in her dismissal by the college’s governing body on July 6, 2011. She appealed the decision, and in October 2012, an appeals committee softened the punishment from full dismissal to termination—but only to let her keep her retirement benefits.
Talloo wasn’t satisfied and challenged the 2012 order in the Delhi High Court under Section 34 of the relevant act. But Justice Jasmeet Singh dismissed her petition on September 12, saying the inquiry was fair, the evidence backed the findings, and there was no reason to change the decision further.
"Proceedings were fair, findings supported by evidence, and the penalty already tempered with leniency," Justice Singh noted. He pointed out that switching termination to voluntary retirement would mean rewriting the award, which the court can’t do.
The judge emphasized how grave the misconduct was: "Solicitation of illegal gratification from students strikes at the core of academic integrity." The appeals committee had confirmed all charges against her and ensured the punishment fit the crime while protecting her retirement dues.
This ruling sends a clear message against corruption in Indian universities, especially in high-profile institutions like Delhi University. It highlights the importance of fair probes and strict action to maintain trust in education. ()
