Security forces in Manipur scored a major win against militants and drug smugglers this week. In coordinated raids across seven districts, the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, and Manipur Police arrested nine hardcore militants and seized 36 weapons, along with improvised explosive devices (IEDs), drugs, and other military gear. These operations targeted both hilly areas and the Imphal Valley, showing a strong push to keep the region safe.

The raids hit districts like Tengnoupal, Thoubal, Imphal East, Tamenglong, Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, and Chandel over the past few days. Officials say the arrests came from intelligence tips, nabbing members of groups such as the Socialist Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (SOREPA), Revolutionary People’s Front (RPF)/People’s Liberation Army (PLA), Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group), and United National Liberation Front (UNLF).

Among the haul were four self-loading rifles (SLRs), four INSAS rifles, two .303 rifles, one AR-15 or M-16 rifle, several bolt-action rifles, multiple 9mm pistols, a scope, 82 live rounds of ammunition, 25 magazines, and three mobile phones. Defence spokesman Lt Col Amit Shukla highlighted how these joint efforts by security forces underscore their dedication to peace in Manipur.

In a standout bust tied to these operations, forces along the Sita-Tengnoupal road in Tengnoupal district—right on the Myanmar border—uncovered a massive drug load Monday night. They found 600 packets of highly addictive methamphetamine tablets, totaling 120,000 pills and weighing 13 kg. Valued at over Rs 39 crore, the drugs were hidden on a Chinese Kenbo bike that the rider ditched and fled upon spotting the team. Police seized the contraband and the bike, and they’re now hunting the suspect. Experts suspect the shipment came from Myanmar across the state’s 398 km unfenced border.

Manipur police report ongoing search operations and patrols in vulnerable border zones and the Imphal Valley. They set up 116 checkpoints (Nak as) across hill and valley districts, detaining three people in the last 24 hours. With militancy and drug trafficking threats lingering, these actions aim to dominate risky areas and prevent more trouble.
