‘Mann Ki Baat’: PM Modi hails BSF, CRPF for increasing Indian breed dogs in their contingents

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised two of India’s key security forces, the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), for boosting the number of native Indian dogs in their teams. The praise came on Sunday, just a few days before Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, the national unity day celebrated on October 31.

Why the focus on Indian dogs?
India’s indigenous breeds—such as the Rampur Hound from Uttar Pradesh and the Mudhol Hound from Karnataka and Maharashtra—are tough, loyal and well‑suited to the country’s varied climate and terrain. In 2018, Modi had urged security agencies to switch from expensive foreign breeds to these native dogs. Since then, the BSF and CRPF have worked hard to train and deploy them.

Upcoming showcase at Ekta Nagar
In a historic first, the BSF will parade a dedicated unit of Indian‑breed dogs at the Ekta Diwas parade in Ekta Nagar, Gujarat. The event will also feature a live K‑9 training demo that highlights the dogs’ tactical skills and operational excellence—showing how a self‑reliant K‑9 force can protect the nation.

Modi’s “Mann Ki Baat” message
Speaking on the 127th episode of his monthly radio show, “Mann Ki Baat,” Modi said he hopes the program inspires listeners to act for society’s good. He reminded them of a 2018 call for adopting native dogs, noting how the BSF and CRPF have taken up the challenge.

Training innovations
At the BSF’s National Training Centre for Dogs in Tekanpur, Gwalior, trainers use technology and updated manuals that focus on the unique strengths of Rampur and Mudhol Hounds. Meanwhile, the CRPF’s Dog Breeding and Training School in Bengaluru is training a mix of mongrels and native breeds like Kombai and Pandikona.

Success stories
The PM highlighted a standout moment from the All India Police Duty Meet last year: a Mudhol Hound named “Riya” from the BSF won first prize, beating several foreign breeds. He also noted how an indigenous CRPF dog spotted eight kilograms of explosives during a patrol in Chhattisgarh’s Maoist‑affected area.

Looking forward
Modi said he’s excited to see how the dogs will perform at the October 31 parade, a celebration that honors Sardar Patel, India’s “Iron Man.” He urged everyone to watch the Ekta Diwas parade and feel the pride of India’s own K‑9 heroes.
