During his weekly radio show “Mann Ki Baat,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the “Iron Man of India.” Modi highlighted how India owes a great debt to Patel for his work as Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister.

Patel was born on 31 October 1875. This year, India marks the 150th anniversary of his birth. “Patel is one of the greatest leaders of modern India,” Modi said. He praised Patel’s sharp mind, noting that the lawyer excelled in studies in India and Britain before dedicating his life to the freedom movement after meeting Gandhi.

Modi remembered Patel’s early campaigns, from the Kheda to the Borsad satyagrahas, and his historic term as head of the Ahmedabad Municipality, which focused on cleanliness and good governance. He added that Patel built the foundations for India’s bureaucracy and helped keep the country united.

Every year, the nation hosts the “Run For Unity,” a marathon that takes place across India. Participants of all ages qualify to honor Patel and strengthen national solidarity. Modi urged listeners to join the run on 31 October, encouraging people to run together, “so that we can give a true tribute to the great luminary who united India.”

By celebrating Patel’s legacy, Modi reminds us that the bonds of unity he forged are as strong today as they were over a century ago.
