Massive accidental blast at Srinagar police station; casualties feared, terror angle ruled out

A massive blast happened inside the Nowgam police station in Srinagar district, Jammu & Kashmir, on Saturday, shaking nearby buildings and shattering glass as far as 10 km away.

The loud explosion was blamed on a mishandled sample of ammonium nitrate that police were testing after recovering the chemical from a white‑collar terror operation in Faridabad, an effort that netted about 2,900 kg of the explosive.

Authorities say the event was purely accidental – no signs of a terror attack – but the blast caused injuries to nine police officers who were on the scene at the time. Cars parked inside the station caught fire, forcing fire crews to fight the blaze while ambulances rushed wounded officers to hospitals.

The Faridabad raid also led to the arrests of Dr Adil Rather and Dr Muzammil Ganaie, with a third suspect, Dr Umar Nabi, killed in a car explosion near the Red Fort. The bust of the terror module highlighted the presence of two over‑ground workers from the Jaish‑e‑Mohammad group and the arrest of a Lucknow doctor, Shaheen Shahid, following the discovery of an assault rifle in her vehicle.
