Mehbooba Mufti cautions authorities against ‘high-handedness’ while probing Delhi terror blast

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and People’s Democratic Party president Mehbooba Mu Mufti took to X on Sunday to criticize the police’s handling of the white‑collar terror investigation, citing a tragic incident in Kulgam district.

Mu Mufti shared a photo of Bilal Wani, an anguished father from Wanpora Qazigund who set himself on fire after police detained his two sons, Jasir Bilal and Naveel Wani. The father pleaded for a chance to see his children, but authorities denied him, sending him to SM HP Hospital in Srinagar—where he now lies in critical condition. “This high‑handedness deepens wounds and drives young men into despair,” Mu Mufti wrote, urging the Jammu and Kashmir Police to at least let him meet the detained family members.

The incident comes amid a spree of arrests following the November 10 Red Fort blast that killed 12 people, when an I‑20 car exploded near a traffic crossing. Police have questioned dozens of suspects linked to the terror cell that planned the attack.

Notable arrests include Dr. Muzammil Ganaie, who was seized in Faridabad along with 2,900 kg of ammonium nitrate, trigger devices and other evidence. Dr. Adil Rather, caught in Qazigund after an AK‑47 rifle was found in his locker at the Government Medical College in Anantnag, later joined Al‑Falah University in Faridabad. His brother, Dr. Muzaffar Ali Rather, is believed to be part of the same terror module and has fled to Dubai; Jammu & Kashmir police have approached Interpol for a Red Corner Notice.

The police also arrested Shaheen Shahid, a female doctor from Lucknow working at Al‑Falah University, after an assault rifle surfaced in her car. She too is alleged to have ties to the white‑collar terror network in Faridabad.

Bilal Wani’s story, like those of other residents in Qazigund—including the Razors, Too—highlights the broader community’s fear and frustration. Mu Mufti’s call for more humane police conduct aims to prevent further alienation of a generation that may otherwise turn to darker paths.
