A migrant worker from West Bengal met a tragic end just days after returning home for the Durga Puja festival. Subhash Kujur, who had been working in New Delhi, was shot dead in Alipurduar district on Monday night, police confirmed Tuesday.
Kujur had arrived in his hometown only two days earlier, excited for the celebrations. As he rode his motorcycle along a road cutting through the Buxa Tiger Reserve, a group of criminals stopped him, fired at close range, and sped away, according to local witnesses.
Nearby villagers quickly rushed to the scene and took the injured man to Alipurduar District Hospital. Doctors there declared him dead on arrival. Police sent his body for a post-mortem exam and launched a full investigation into the Alipurduar shooting.
Kujur’s wife, Arati, pointed to a long-running family feud over land as the likely motive. “The dispute started back in 2008, and we’re still fighting it in court,” she told police. “We suspect our rivals in this legal battle hired someone to murder my husband. I just want justice for him.”
Alipurduar Superintendent of Police Y. Raghuvamshi said officers are digging deep into the migrant worker murder case. A senior police official noted the professional style of the attack—stopping the victim, shooting him point-blank in the head—which suggests hired killers were involved.
So far, no arrests have been made in connection with the West Bengal land dispute killing. Authorities urge anyone with information to come forward as the probe continues.
