Mizoram Takes Bold Steps to Strengthen Crime Investigation and Forensic Science
Aizawl, September 2 — In a major move to improve crime investigation and increase convictions, the Mizoram government has announced new measures across the state. These steps aim to speed up investigations of all types of crimes, including cyber crimes, and improve forensic support.
To make forensic testing faster and more efficient, Mizoram’s government has upgraded facilities in all 11 districts. They are also planning to hire more trained forensic experts soon. A senior police official shared that home minister K. Sapdanga recently launched 10 new Mobile Forensic Vehicles (MFVs), which will play a crucial role in crime scene investigations.
These high-tech vehicles cost Rs. 4.81 crore, funded by the Indian government. Fully equipped with essential forensic tools, these vehicles arrived in Mizoram last August and will help transport and analyze evidence quickly from crime scenes, even in remote areas.
The new criminal law, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) 2023, came into effect nationwide from July 1, 2024. This law emphasizes the importance of forensic examinations, especially for serious crimes with more than 7 years of punishment. Forensic experts now have a vital role in certifying evidence, making investigations more scientific and reliable.
The central government is also supporting Mizoram with advanced forensic infrastructure. They have allocated Rs. 6.13 crore for the Mizoram Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), bringing in 15 sets of cutting-edge equipment and the Mobile Forensic Vehicles. This boost helps the state stay updated with the latest forensic technology.
Right now, Mizoram’s Forensic Science Laboratory is based in the New Capital Complex and has mobile units in Aizawl, Lunglei, and Champhai. Plans are underway to establish more district units in the future. During the flag-off ceremony, Home Minister Sapdanga highlighted that India is among the world leaders in forensic science, noting the role of science in major cases like the 2012 Delhi gangrape, which exposed the need for better investigative tools.
He also pointed out that India has been making significant progress to strengthen forensic capabilities. Mizoram is already among the front runners in adopting modern systems such as paperless case management, faster test results, and efficient case tracking.
Under the leadership of Director T. Lalropuia, the Mizoram Forensic Science Laboratory now has 14 skilled professionals who regularly visit crime scenes, conduct examinations, and assist courts with expert testimony. Their work has already played a key role in ensuring fair justice in many important cases.
With these new investments and initiatives, Mizoram is fast becoming more effective in solving crimes and delivering justice to its people.
