Monsoon havoc blocks 598 roads, disrupts water supply in Himachal Pradesh; death toll reaches 404

Himachal Pradesh is facing tough times from heavy monsoon rains, with the death toll reaching 404 since June 20. The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) says roads, power, and water supplies are still badly hit across the state.

In its latest update on Monday morning, the SDMA shared that 598 roads are blocked, including key national highways like NH-03, NH-305, and NH-503A. Landslides, flash floods, and non-stop rains have also damaged 500 power transformers and knocked out 184 drinking water schemes.

Out of the 404 deaths, 229 happened in rain-related tragedies such as landslides, flash floods, drowning, and house collapses. Another 175 people lost their lives in road accidents during this monsoon season.

Mandi district is one of the hardest hit, with 201 roads closed and 314 power transformers out of action. In Kullu, 172 roads remain blocked, including the busy Manali-Atal Tunnel Rohtang route and the Anni-Jalori highway. Heavy vehicles can’t use these paths yet.

Shimla has 57 blocked roads and 49 water supply schemes down, leaving many rural areas without clean drinking water. In Una, damage to the Bhadsali bridge’s walls shut down NH-503A, making travel between districts even harder.

Restoration teams are working hard to fix things, but bad weather and fresh landslides are delaying efforts in high-altitude, risky areas. Officials are using heavy machines to clear major highways and restore power and water to villages. The SDMA warns people in Mandi, Kullu, and Shimla to skip unnecessary trips, as more rain could bring new problems.

On Sunday, Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Ajay Tamta visited flood-hit spots in Mandi and Kullu to check the damage. Leader of the Opposition Jairam Thakur joined him there.

Tamta inspected the wrecked national highways and met with local officials. Thakur told that after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Himachal Pradesh, seven central ministers got tasks to assess ground-level losses. “This meeting was key—they gave great suggestions, and I thank the PM for that. Tamta will report the damages to the central ministry and share it in a high-level meeting. We hope the state government wraps up relief work soon,” Thakur added.
