MP: Chhindwara chemists announce indefinite strike after shops sealed over cough syrup tragedy

In Chhindwara, a town in Madhya Pradesh, a local chemist association has gone on strike to protest new government actions that shut down several drug stores.
The association’s president, Santosh Chore, said the district administration sealed five chemist shops and issued showcause notices, but fair action should instead target drug manufacturers and the labs that approved the medicines. “We are not against investigating or testing the drugs,” Chore told (Asian News International), “but sealing the shops is wrong. We demand that the pharmacy owners be released and the investigation process be re‑examined.”
The strike begins at midnight and will continue until the authorities change the investigation rules or lift the shop closures. The chemists say the closures have stopped business and even disrupted their plans to clean their stores for Diwali.
The crackdown comes amid a larger alarm over the “Coldrif” cough syrup. Madhya Pradesh’s Deputy Chief Minister and Health Minister Rajendra Shukla reported that 20 children in the state have died after taking the syrup, and 5 more are still in treatment. Seventeen of the deaths occurred in Chhindwara, two in Betul, and one in Pandhurna.
Shukla added that police teams have raided Coldrif’s manufacturing plant in Chennai and Kanchipuram to arrest the owner. The state government is taking “strict action” and is covering all treatment costs for children in need. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced that the state will pay for the treatment of nine children with kidney infections caused by the cough syrup and that a joint team of magistrates and doctors will monitor patients in Nagpur.
In short, a local chemist strike is unfolding in response to shop shut‑downs, while state officials respond to a still‑ongoing child‑death crisis linked to a suspect cough syrup. The community and government are both scrambling for answers and solutions.
