MP creates 354 senior resident doctors posts in key govt hospitals

Madhya Pradesh’s government just took a big step to fix the shortage of medical teachers in its public hospitals and colleges. They’ve greenlit 354 new senior resident doctor positions in major facilities across Bhopal, Gwalior, and Jabalpur.

This move aims to strengthen both patient care and medical education in the state. For years, government hospitals here didn’t have dedicated spots for resident doctors—key roles that help physicians gain the hands-on experience needed to teach at medical colleges. Under current rules, doctors need at least one year as residents to qualify for those faculty jobs.

Without these opportunities, the state faced a real roadblock in building up its teaching staff, even as more medical colleges popped up. “This is a significant decision,” said Kailash Vijayvargia, the urban development minister and government spokesperson, right after Tuesday’s cabinet meeting. He added that without senior resident roles, doctors couldn’t build the practical skills required, which stalled the growth of qualified faculty.

Now, these new posts will let hospitals hire senior residents, creating a pool of experienced doctors ready to shift into teaching positions. Vijayvargia explained that this should ease the faculty shortage and boost the overall quality of medical education in Madhya Pradesh.

Officials expect ripple effects: hospitals gain extra help for daily patient care, while medical colleges get better-trained educators. Resident doctors will juggle treating patients and mentoring students, improving everything from healthcare delivery to classroom standards.

With the state’s healthcare sector booming—new hospitals and medical colleges opening left and right—the need for skilled faculty has skyrocketed. This push to formalize senior residency positions feels like a smart, long-term plan to build capacity. The jobs will roll out soon in those key government hospitals, and even upcoming medical colleges stand to benefit from the influx of resident doctors.
