In Chhindwara district’s Parasia block in Madhya Pradesh, India, health workers are knocking on doors to check on children’s health after nine young kids died in the past month. Officials suspect contaminated cough syrup might be behind the tragedies, and they’re leaving no stone unturned to keep more children safe.
Parasia Sub Divisional Magistrate Shubham Yadav shared that all the children who passed away were under 5 years old. The latest death happened just two days ago. Early tests point to acute kidney injury as the cause, but experts still don’t know exactly what’s going on.
To get answers, teams tested water from areas near the homes of the deceased kids and sent samples to CISR-NEERI for analysis—everything came back negative. They even checked rats and other potential germ carriers from Delhi and Bhopal, with no red flags there either. In a district meeting, leaders zeroed in on two cough syrups that were temporarily banned due to contamination fears. Drug inspectors are now grabbing samples, and results should arrive in about a week.
The Parasia block has around 284,000 people, including about 25,000 children under 5. Through local health workers like ASHA activists and ANM nurses, they’ve surveyed homes and found 4,658 kids showing signs of vomiting, cough, or viral fever. So far, tests on kidney function, liver health, and blood counts for 4,411 of them look normal. The rest of the reports should be in by tonight.
Right now, 13 children are in the hospital as of this morning—one has already recovered. Four are at the district hospital, with two on the mend and two still getting care. Eight more are being treated in nearby Nagpur, where five are improving and three continue treatment.
Yadav says the door-to-door children’s health survey in Chhindwara continues, with extra attention on kids who’ve recovered to ensure they don’t get sick again. They’ve cracked down on the banned syrups, holding meetings with pharmacists who pledged support. Private doctors are referring any child under 10 straight to the district hospital instead of treating them themselves. It’s all about protecting these little ones in the Parasia block amid worries over cough syrup contamination and child deaths from kidney failure.
