MP: Female Cheetah Dheera translocated to Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary

In a big win for India’s wildlife conservation efforts, a female cheetah named Dheera took her first steps into the wild at Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh’s Mandsaur district. This exciting move happened on Wednesday afternoon as part of Project Cheetah, the ambitious program to bring back cheetahs to India.
Dheera, who’s about 7.5 years old, traveled all the way from Kuno National Park in a special air-conditioned vehicle. The seven-hour journey kicked off at dawn, with a team of veterinary experts, field staff, and senior forest officials keeping a close eye on her every step. She stayed calm and alert inside her transport crate, making sure the trip was smooth and stress-free. By around 2 pm, the convoy reached Gandhi Sagar, the second key site for cheetah reintroduction after Kuno.
As soon as they opened the crate door, Dheera took a quick moment to check out her new surroundings. Then, in a flash of speed and grace, she bounded out, ready to explore her fresh habitat. It was a thrilling sight that shows how well the team handled the relocation.
This step is huge for Project Cheetah, which aims to boost the cheetah population in India and support biodiversity. Gandhi Sagar already welcomed two male cheetahs back in April, released by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav. Now, with Dheera joining them, experts hope it leads to breeding and a stronger, self-sustaining group of cheetahs. It’s all part of the government’s push to expand cheetah habitats and revive this iconic species.
