MP: Organic and natural farming spikes up income of Guna farmers

Bhopal, November 2 – In Guna district of Madhya Pradesh, farmers are turning to organic and natural farming and seeing real money in their pockets. The village fields that once struggled with low yields are now producing high‑priced, chemical‑free produce that sells well in local markets.
The district administration, together with the state Horticulture and Agriculture Department, launched a new weekly farmers’ market in Shastri Park on Sundays. The event gives growers a chance to sell fresh, organic fruits and vegetables straight to shoppers and provides the public with a reliable source of pesticide‑free produce.
Collector Kishore Kumar Kanyal cut the ribbon on the first market. Farmers from Bakori, Raghogarh, and nearby villages showed off everything from Thai guava and spinach to wheat, moong dal, and organic fertilizers. Attendees, in turn, bought large quantities, boosting the farmers’ earnings.
Many growers say the switch to organic methods has boosted their income, in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s goal to double farmers’ profits. “With the right guidance, we can grow a lot more on less land,” says Nathu Ram Lodha. He now cultivates 1½ acres, producing about 10 kg per unit consistently.
Udayam Singh Lodha, speaking to reporters, added that advice from the Horticulture Department and the Atma Project’s Agriculture Division helped him refine his techniques. “Natural farming not only improves soil health but also raises our yields,” he said.
Mohan Singh, a long‑time farmer, explained how the new approach changed his crop prices: wheat can now fetch ₹6,000 per quintal, mung beans ₹12,000, and sugarcane ₹10,000—much higher than before. The extra revenue has made a noticeable difference in his household.
Deputy Director of the Horticulture Department, KPS Kirar, highlighted that the weekly market fits “the Prime Minister’s vision of doubling farmers’ income and ensuring nutritious food for everyone.” The market now serves as a model for other districts to follow.
With organic farming gaining traction, Guna’s farmers are proving that natural methods can bring profit, sustainability, and healthier food to the table. As the Sunday stalls fill, the district’s success story is poised to inspire more farmers across Madhya Pradesh and beyond.
