Mumbai, Dec 26 — The Mumbai Congress announced on Friday that it had issued a “chargesheet” against the current governing alliance.
The document accuses the Mahayuti coalition of misappropriating the city’s resources. It points to the fact that, for the past three years and nine months, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has operated under an administrator because civic elections have not taken place. Without elected representatives, the party claims the Mahayuti can act unchecked.
According to the chargesheet, the Mahayuti has drained BMC’s financial reserves, siphoned off fixed deposits, and let roads crumble into potholes, worsening traffic congestion, air quality, and waste management. The report also lists the transfer of municipal schools to private hands and the sale of public land. It questions the transparency of the Mithi River project and other large‑budget infrastructure initiatives.
“This Mahayuti has looted Mumbaikars through the administration. Basic facilities are non‑existent today. The city is being sold off to favoured contractors and industrialists, leading to the ruin of the country’s financial capital. The BMC has essentially become a ‘Corrupt Mahayuti Corporation,’” stated Mumbai Congress president and MP Varsha Gaikwad.
Gaikwad urged that the upcoming BMC elections focus on civic issues rather than caste, religion or language. “Mumbaikars do not want communal disputes; they want development. Our focus is on water supply, healthcare, education and public transport,” she said. The party plans to issue its manifesto for Mumbai shortly thereafter.
When asked about possible alliances, Gaikwad said talks were underway with the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi and other like‑minded groups, and a final decision would be made soon.
Meanwhile, Congress officials confirmed that the party is poised to contest the BMC elections in partnership with the Prakash Ambedkar‑led Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi. The party has already distanced itself from the Shiv Sena‑UBT following that group’s alliance with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena led by Raj Thackeray.
