Mumbai Congress Unveils Chargesheet Accusing Mahayuti Coalition of Mismanagement
Mumbai, Dec. 26 – The local unit of the Congress party released a detailed chargesheet on Friday outlining what it claims are widespread corruption and administrative failures during the Mahayuti council’s rule of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The coalition has been managing the corporation through an appointed administrator for nearly four years, after elections were suspended.
India National News reports that Varsha Gaikwad, Mumbai Congress president and MP, presented the document and accused the ruling alliance of siphoning off the city’s resources through the administrators over the past three‑year, nine‑month period. She argued that the absence of elected officials enabled the Mahayuti to operate without accountability.
The chargesheet cites several problems: a significant drain on BMC financial reserves by depleting fixed deposits; worsening road conditions with persistent potholes; increased traffic congestion; rising air‑pollution levels; mismanagement of solid‑waste operations; the transfer of municipal schools to private hands; and the sale of public land. It also questions the openness of the Mithi River project and various other large‑budget infrastructure initiatives.
“The Mahayuti has looted Mumbaikars through the administration. Basic facilities are non‑existent today. The city is being sold off to favoured contractors and industrialists, leading to the ruin of the country’s financial capital. The BMC has essentially become a ‘Corrupt Mahayuti Corporation’,” Gaikwad said.
She urged that the next BMC elections be fought on civic issues rather than caste, religion or language lines. “Mumbaikars do not want communal disputes; they want development. Our focus is on water supply, healthcare, education and public transport,” she added, noting that Congress would soon release its Mumbai manifesto.
When pressed about potential electoral alliances, Gaikwad indicated that talks are underway with the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi and other like‑minded parties, and that a final decision will be announced shortly.
Bunch of Congress leaders have signaled that the party will likely contest the BMC elections in partnership with the Prakash Ambedkar‑led Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi. The party has already moved away from the Shiv Sena‑UBT following the latter’s alliance with the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena headed by Raj Thackeray.
