Mumbai Monorail Breakdown: Passengers Safe After Technical Snag in Wadala
Mumbai’s monorail system hit another bump on Monday morning when a train suddenly stopped in the Wadala area due to technical glitches. The good news? No one got hurt, and all passengers quickly moved to another train, according to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
The incident happened around 9 AM on the route heading to Wadala. Officials pointed to a supply issue as the main problem. Ward Councillor Rajesh Ananda Bhojane from Ward 175, representing the Republican Party of India (Athawale), didn’t hold back. Talking to , he said, "The train just halted, and we shifted passengers to the one coming from Chembur. The fire brigade arrived soon after and got to work. Monorail officials blame a supply glitch, but this keeps happening. I urge the Maharashtra government to fix these recurring Mumbai monorail breakdowns once and for all."
This isn’t the first time Mumbai’s monorail has faced such troubles. Just last month, on August 19, a similar drama unfolded near Mysore Colony station. That time, a power supply failure brought the train to a screeching halt, leading to a major rescue effort by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), fire department, and police.
In that episode, the Mumbai Fire Brigade stepped in heroically. They rescued 582 passengers stuck inside. Twenty-three people felt suffocated and got on-site treatment from ambulance teams, while two others headed to Sion Hospital for check-ups and were discharged later that day.
Chief Fire Officer Ravindra Ambulgekar shared with , "Some passengers had breathing issues from the heat and crowd, but everyone is safe now. We got them all out without any major problems." Firefighters even used snorkel vehicles to reach those on the upper levels, and BEST buses ferried everyone to nearby railway stations. The whole Mumbai monorail rescue operation took over three and a half hours.
MMRDA’s initial probe into the August incident pinned the blame on overcrowding, which sparked the power failure. As Mumbai’s monorail network grows to ease city traffic, these glitches highlight the need for better maintenance. Commuters hope authorities act fast to keep the rides smooth and safe.
