Guwahati – Dec 1 (LatestNewsX) – Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, sent heartfelt wishes to the people of Nagaland on Monday as the state celebrated its Foundation Day, a time to honour its vibrant culture and steady progress over the past decades.
On social media, CM Sarma posted, “Warm greetings to my brothers & sisters in Nagaland on the state’s Foundation Day! A land of vibrant cultures, proud traditions & enduring spirit, Nagaland inspires with its journey of harmony & progress. May the state reach new heights of peace, development & prosperity in the year ahead.”
His message arrives as the Northeast is deepening collaboration, with fresh steps on interstate ties, trade links and cultural exchanges taking shape.
In recent years, the Assam leader has highlighted the importance of regional unity, repeatedly urging that “the Northeast will rise together” as a shared economic and cultural bloc.
Nagaland earned statehood on December 1, 1963, becoming India’s 16th state. Its creation followed extensive talks and the historic 1960 pact signed between the Government of India and the Naga People’s Convention (NPC). That agreement paved the way for a fully-fledged state with special safeguards under Article 371(A).
The Foundation Day not only marks Nagaland’s institutional beginning but also celebrates the resilience and aspirations of its people. The state is home to over a dozen major tribes, each with unique traditions, festivals and social structures.
The Hornbill Festival, which kicks off each year on December 1, has become one of India’s most famous cultural events and a major draw for tourists, embodying the unity among Nagaland’s tribes. Over time, the state has advanced education, rural development and entrepreneurship while staying engaged in long‑term dialogues aimed at lasting peace.
Celebrating the foundation day offers a chance for reflection on how far the state has come and a reaffirmation of hopes for continued stability and growth. With leaders across the region, including CM Sarma, extending greetings, the day underscored a shared commitment to a brighter future for Northeast India.
