In Kohima, the capital of Nagaland, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) officially decided to merge with the Naga People’s Front (NPF). The two parties agreed during the NDPP’s sixth general convention, which took place on Saturday at the Capital Cultural Hall.
The merger pushes the People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) coalition—already led by the NDPP and including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and NPF—to a stronger position. The BJP has 12 MLAs in the state, while the NPF brings two legislators, making the PDA a formidable union of regional forces.
NDPP President Chingwang Konyak, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Deputy Chief Minister T R Zeliang, and many ministers and lawmakers attended the convention. They signed a unanimous resolution that the NDPP will dissolve and become part of the NPF. The formal takeover will happen on October 21, during the NPF’s own general convention, which also marks its 63rd foundation day.
The NPF is one of india’s oldest regional parties, with a solid presence in Nagaland, Manipur, and Arunachal Pradesh. In Manipur’s 60‑member assembly, the NPF holds five seats and has been a junior partner of the \(BJP\). The NDPP’s leaders said the merger is a “mature and well‑calibrated” move that will strengthen the Naga cause and unite the region’s political voices.
Both party leaders praised each other’s leadership. NDPP leaders acknowledged the “absolute dynamism and political presence” of Konyak and Chief Minister Rio, crediting them for the party’s rise. Rio, who founded the NDPP after leaving the NPF in 2017, is expected to lead the newly united party.
Before the convention, senior leaders from both parties met to finalize details and select new leaders. They celebrated the merger as a historic step that could boost regional unity and give Naga communities a stronger platform.
The completed unification will bring the NDA coalition under a single banner, potentially reshaping politics in Nagaland and neighboring states. The move is expected to unify the Naga people’s aspirations and give them greater influence in the national arena.
