Nagarjuna withdraws defamation case against Telangana minister Surekha
In Hyderabad on Thursday, famous Tollywood star Akkineni Nagarjuna dropped a defamation lawsuit against Telangana’s Endowments and Forest Minister Konda Surekha. The move came after Surekha apologized on social media for remarks she made earlier that angered the actor and his family.
The Special Judicial First‑Class Magistrate court in Hyderabad recorded that Nagarjuna had filed a petition under Section 280 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), essentially telling the court he was withdrawing the case.
Surekha had previously posted on X (formerly Twitter) to say her comments were not meant to hurt Nagarjuna or his relatives. “I regret any unintended impression and withdraw the statements,” she wrote.
Her statements dated back to October 2023, when she blamed BRS (Bharat Rashtra Samithi) Working President K. T. Rama Rao—commonly known as KTR—for the divorce between Nagarjuna’s son, actor Naga Chaitanya, and actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu. The couple had since said their split was mutual and amicable, and Samantha urged the minister to respect privacy.
After Surekha’s comments, Bangalore‑based politician KTR sent a legal notice demanding a retraction and apology. Later, KTR filed defamation proceedings against the minister.
When asked by the press, Surekha said she had no personal grudge against any party. She claimed her remarks were unintentional and that she was provoked by KTR’s statements. “I made those remarks unintentionally, and upon realizing I hurt someone, I felt bad and withdrew them,” she told reporters.
The case’s withdrawal means Nagarjuna will not pursue the lawsuit, and the political flap involving the minister, KTR, and the Tollywood family is likely to subside, at least for now.
