In the capital of Jammu and Kashmir, the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) made a clear move ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections. The party announced that Chowdry Mohamad Ramzan, Sajjad Ahmad Kichloo and Shammi Oberoi will fight for three seats in the upper house of Parliament. The fourth seat will be decided later, with an announcement expected in the next few days.
During the press conference, Nasir Aslam Wani, an advisor to the Chief Minister, confirmed that the JKNC president, Farooq Abdullah, will not stand for the Rajya Sabha polls. “Farooq wants to stay in J&K for now,” Wani said, noting that the party needs his experience at the state level. He added that Farooq’s guidance is seen as more valuable in Jammu and Kashmir itself.
The announcement comes as the Supreme Court of India has given the central government an additional four weeks to respond to petitions that ask the Centre to restore the former statehood of Jammu and Kashmir. Chief Justice R. B. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran granted this extension when Solicitor General Tushar Mehta requested more time.
Mehta told the bench that while there has been progress in the territory, incidents such as the Pahalgam terror attack cannot be ignored. He said that the Centre and the Jammu and Kashmir government are still in consultation before they can take a final decision. He also updated the court that the Assembly elections concluded peacefully, and an elected government took office as promised after the abrogation of Article 370 and the split of the region into two Union Territories.
The Rajya Sabha nominations announced by the JKNC therefore set the stage for the upcoming polls, while the legal battle over statehood continues in the Supreme Court. For voters and observers, the three nominees—Chowdry Ramzan, Sajjad Kichloo and Shammi Oberoi—represent the party’s direct interest in shaping national policy from the Rajya Sabha, while the possibility of a fourth candidate remains on the table.
Key takeaways:
* JKNC names three candidates for Rajya Sabha: Chowdry Mohamad Ramzan, Sajjad Ahmad Kichloo, Shammi Oberoi.
* Fourth seat to be announced soon.
* JKNC president Farooq Abdullah will stay in Jammu and Kashmir and not contest.
* Supreme Court grants the Centre four more weeks to reply on statehood petitions.
* The court emphasizes that incidents such as the Pahalgam terror attack must be considered before any final decision.
These developments highlight the evolving political dynamics in Jammu and Kashmir and the legal questions surrounding its status. Polls and legal proceedings are both moving forward, with the Supreme Court’s decision poised to shape the region’s future.
