Naveen Patnaik Slams Odisha BJP Government Over Shocking Gang Rape Near Puri Temple
In a strong outburst, Biju Janata Dal (BJD) chief and former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik hit out at the BJP-led state government on Tuesday. He condemned the alleged gang rape of a young woman near the famous Maa Baliharachandi temple in Puri district, calling it a heartbreaking example of rising violence against women in Odisha.
Patnaik shared his anguish on X (formerly Twitter), saying he’s "deeply shocked" by the incident, which happened just 50 km from the state capital, Bhubaneswar. "It’s heart-rending to see these horrifying patterns of violence against women across Odisha," he wrote. He accused BJP leaders of putting on a "theatrical display of concern" while the culprits roam freely in broad daylight without fear.
Demanding immediate and strict action against the guilty, Patnaik pointed out that victims from places like Gopalpur, Baleswar, and Balanga are still waiting for justice. Many families have lost loved ones to despair, he added. "Every time, we hear the same rehearsed lines: the government is taking strict action, ensuring women’s safety, and sparing no one. But the BJP administration in Odisha has failed badly to build trust in the system where our daughters feel safe, valued, and heard—let alone empowered," Patnaik said.
He warned that such crimes near popular tourist spots like Baliharachandi Peeth could damage Odisha’s image both in India and abroad. "If the BJP government acts strongly and fast, women in Odisha can feel safe again," he urged.
What Happened in the Puri Gang Rape Case?
According to police reports, the horrific incident unfolded at Baliharchandi Peeth, a well-known tourist spot in Puri. A young man and woman had gone there when four local youths from Chandiput village clicked their photos and used them to blackmail the couple. The woman was then allegedly gang-raped by the group.
Police have arrested two suspects so far and are investigating the case. Puri District Collector Divya Jyoti Parida confirmed that an inquiry is underway. "The police will take all required legal steps after the probe," she told .
This incident has sparked outrage over women’s safety in Odisha, especially in tourist areas, and renewed calls for better protection and swift justice.
