NCERT launches ‘Swadeshi: Vocal for Local’ modules for school students

India’s National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) just rolled out two exciting new modules called “Swadeshi: Vocal for Local.” These lessons tie Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat—self-reliant India—to the famous Swadeshi Movement from over a century ago. They aim to inspire students to embrace local products with pride, boosting India’s economy and heritage.

The modules kick off with highlights from PM Modi’s 79th Independence Day speech. He stressed that self-reliance forms the foundation of a strong and dignified nation. He urged everyone, from citizens to shopkeepers, to choose India-made goods not because they have to, but because it feels good to support homegrown talent.

Diving into history, the modules spotlight the Swadeshi Movement’s launch in 1905 at Calcutta Town Hall. Leaders like Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Lala Lajpat Rai, and Bipin Chandra Pal rallied crowds to ditch British imports and pick up Indian alternatives. Later, Mahatma Gandhi called Swadeshi the heart of swaraj—self-rule—and turned it into a push for social and spiritual independence too.

But it’s not all about the past. The lessons connect these roots to today’s big initiatives. Take the India Semiconductor Mission, for instance. This program works to cut India’s reliance on imported chips and build homegrown expertise. Semiconductors power everything from smartphones and cars to defense tech, so they’re key for economic growth and national security. With investments in chip factories and design centers, India is stepping up as a global innovation leader in this vital sector.

The modules also share inspiring stories of everyday entrepreneurs living the Vocal for Local spirit. In Kerala, a determined woman started Bodhi Sathwa Coir Works. She hires local women to craft handmade coir mats by hand, and now these products reach customers worldwide.

Over in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur district, a young villager turned his gaushala (cow shelter) into a buzzing job hub. He makes compost, eco-friendly diyas, and herbal items from cow dung, creating opportunities for his whole community.

Government programs get a shoutout too, especially the One District One Product (ODOP) initiative. It highlights over 1,200 unique items from more than 750 districts—from handicrafts to food products. These gems now sell on platforms like GeM and ONDC, and India promotes them abroad with special ODOP Walls in places like Singapore, Milan, New York, and Tokyo. ODOP revives Swadeshi ideals by giving artisans steady markets and safeguarding India’s rich cultural traditions.

To make it relatable for kids, the modules weave in simple, real-life examples. Picture students picking traditional toys like Channapatna dolls from Karnataka or Thanjavur bobbleheads from Tamil Nadu as gifts. These choices support local artisans, keep old crafts alive, and offer safe, green options over imported stuff. Families get tips too: Use homegrown items during festivals to honor Gandhi’s dream of self-reliance.

The lessons go deeper, framing India’s push for self-reliance in its ancient legacy. They recall legendary knowledge hubs like Nalanda and Takshashila, plus groundbreaking inventions such as zero, the decimal system, and advanced metalwork. This timeless innovative spirit fuels the Vocal for Local call today, as India strides toward becoming a developed nation.
