India ranks third in Asia Power Index 2025, just behind US and China

On November 28, the Australia‑based Lowy Institute announced that India has risen to third place in its Asia Power Index 2025, with the United States and China occupying the top two spots. The yearly ranking gauges how Asian states shape their external environment, drawing on 131 indicators across eight themes—including military strength, economic links, diplomatic clout, and resilience—to determine overall power.

In this edition, the United States leads with a score of 81.7, while China holds second place with a 73.7 point tally, a modest one‑point gain. India scores 40, representing a 2‑point lift that positions it well ahead of many of its continental rivals and reflects a robust post‑COVID economic recovery coupled with growing geopolitical reach.

The Lowy Institute highlighted that India’s economic and military capacities have both expanded, enabling the nation to cross the threshold for “major power” status in the index. Meanwhile, Russia is on a rebound, having forged defense and economic partnerships with nations such as North Korea and China. Japan’s overall influence remains largely unchanged, although several Southeast Asian states have registered modest improvements. Australia, by contrast, faces a long‑term challenge to preserve its relative power as China steadily narrows the gap with the United States.
