Exciting news for fans of Aaron Sorkin’s sharp storytelling: the Oscar-winning director has finally revealed the title and release date for his highly anticipated sequel to The Social Network. Called The Social Reckoning, this new film will arrive in theaters on October 9, 2026, Sony Pictures announced Thursday.
The star-studded cast includes fresh faces and award winners ready to tackle the drama. Mikey Madison, an Oscar winner, leads as Frances Haugen, the young Facebook engineer who sparked major change. Jeremy Allen White, a Golden Globe and Emmy Award winner, plays Jeff Horwitz, the Wall Street Journal reporter who helped expose the company’s secrets. Comedian Bill Burr, an Emmy and Grammy nominee, joins them, along with Oscar nominee Jeremy Strong, who steps into the role of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg.
Sorkin wrote the script, directs the movie, and produces it alongside Todd Black, Peter Rice, and Stuart Besser. Cameras will start rolling next month, building buzz for what promises to be a gripping follow-up.
This sequel serves as a companion to the original The Social Network, jumping nearly two decades ahead to explore real events that rocked the tech world. The story dives into how Haugen teams up with Horwitz on a risky mission to blow the whistle on Facebook’s hidden dangers. Their efforts led to The Facebook Files, a explosive 2021 series of Wall Street Journal articles that revealed the platform’s harm to teens and its role in spreading misinformation, even fueling political violence.
Fans will remember the 2010 hit The Social Network, which Sorkin also wrote and which grossed $226 million worldwide. It earned eight Oscar nominations, including for Best Picture, and won three awards—one for Sorkin’s Best Adapted Screenplay, based loosely on Ben Mezrich’s book The Accidental Billionaires. With this sequel, Sorkin returns to the world of social media giants, promising more of the witty dialogue and real-life intrigue that made the first film a modern classic.
