NDA gave K’taka 273 pc more funds than UPA: Union Minister

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi told reporters in New Delhi that the NDA government has poured roughly three times as many tax‑devolution and subsidy grants into Karnataka as the previous UPA‑led government.

He said the central government is not withholding money from the state; instead, ministerial claims that Karnataka is short‑changed are “untrue and misleading.”

According to Joshi, the 15th Finance Commission initially suggested a special grant of ₹5,495 crore for Karnataka, but the final report dropped it. “So no special grant was released,” he said.

How the numbers stack up

  • From 2004‑14, the UPA gave Karnataka ₹81.8 billion in tax‑devolution grants.
  • From 2014‑24, the NDA has disbursed ₹293 billion – a 273 % jump.
  • This year alone, Karnataka received ₹51.9 billion in grants.
  • Over 11 years, ₹345 billion has flowed to the state.

For subsidy‑related aid, the contrast is similar:

  • UPA (2004‑14): ₹60 billion
  • NDA (2014‑24): ₹239 billion – more than double, a 290 % rise.
  • The 2025‑26 fiscal year will see ₹16 billion in subsidies, bringing the 11‑year total to ₹256 billion.

Joshi also highlighted that the central government has lent Karnataka ₹14.6 billion in interest‑free, 50‑year loans since 2021, with the state paying no interest.

Finance Commission shares

  • 12th FC (2005‑10): 30.5 % share
  • 13th FC (2010‑15): 32 %
  • 14th FC (2015‑20): 42 %
  • 15th FC (2020‑26): 41 % – the 1 % dip attributed to Jammu‑and‑Kashmir’s re‑organisation.

Joshi accused the Congress‑led Karnataka administration of continually claiming a ₹11.5 billion debt owed by the centre, asserting that the state is misrepresenting facts and unfairly blaming the government.

The minister closed by stressing that the central government releases funds strictly on Finance Commission recommendations, and that under Modi’s leadership, the NDA has consistently poured over 10 % more money into Karnataka than earlier administrations.
