Patna, October 6 – The Election Commission of India is set to announce the dates for the 2025 Bihar Assembly polls on Monday, sparking comments from political leaders across the spectrum.
BJP MP Kamaljeet Sehrawat said the coming announcement was a “positive development” for Bihar, adding that a stable NDA‑led government would likely return. “When the government is formed and work begins, progress is made swiftly in various schemes and initiatives,” he told . “I am fully confident that the NDA government will be formed again.”
Senior BJP leaders echoed the sentiment. Chief election commissioner‑talking BJP official Chalavadi Narayanaswamy noted that the final steps of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar had been completed, making elections inevitable. “Like all parties, our party is prepared,” he added. Uttar Pradesh minister Jaiveer Singh also welcomed the announcement, calling it “welcome news” and stating the state’s BJP is ready to win the NDA again.
In contrast, Congress leaders expressed mixed feelings. Congress spokesperson Alok Sharma called the election “a festival of democracy” but criticized the Election Commission for “repeatedly avoiding responsibilities” and being “under the influence of the BJP.” The Congress also warned that the announcement would expose political “dynastic players” and “baseless bravado” from the opposition.
Political analysts say the upcoming poll will pit the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party‑Janata Dal United alliance against the opposition Mahagathbandhan, led by Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress, and left parties. A new challenger, Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party, is also expected to enter the fray, adding uncertainty to the contest.
The current Bihar Assembly finishes on November 22, so the Election Commission must schedule the polls before that date. Sources say the calendar will try to avoid major festivals such as Diwali and Chhath, which fall between October 18 and October 28, to maximize voter turnout.
During the 2020 assembly elections, the National Democratic Alliance won 125 seats, while the Mahagathbandhan secured 110 seats. RJD emerged as the single largest party with 75 seats, and voter turnout reached almost 57 %. The 2025 elections will see several changes to improve the voting experience. Each polling booth will now cater to 1,200 voters instead of 1,500, and the number of booths will increase across Bihar, requiring additional Central Armed Police Forces for security.
The timetable announcement is expected during a press briefing led by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, with Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi in attendance. Just a day after a poll panel delegation reviewed Bihar’s election readiness, the state is gearing up for an intense campaign. What unfolds will likely become one of the most closely watched power contests in India this year.
