2,000 experts from 100 nations to discuss international electrotechnical standards in India

New Delhi is gearing up for a major global event as over 2,000 experts from more than 100 countries arrive for the 89th General Meeting of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution announced this exciting news on Sunday, highlighting India’s big role in shaping international electrotechnical standards.

Hosted by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the five-day IEC General Meeting kicks off on September 15 at Bharat Mandapam. Delegates will dive into discussions on standards that promote a sustainable, all-electric, and connected world—think clean energy, smart tech, and green innovations.

This marks the fourth time India hosts this prestigious gathering, following events in 1960, 1997, and 2013. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, who oversees Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution and New & Renewable Energy, will inaugurate the opening ceremony. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will launch the IEC GM Exhibition, set to be India’s largest showcase in the electrotechnical sector.

The exhibition spotlights cutting-edge advancements in electric mobility, smart lighting, electronics, and IT manufacturing. It’s a golden opportunity for Indian startups to network with global leaders and explore collaborations. Plus, India steps up as the Global Secretariat for Standardisation in Low Voltage Direct Current (LVDC), a key tech for clean, pollution-free energy solutions.

IEC Vice President Vimal Mahendru shared that the organization connects nearly 170 countries, reaching 99% of the world’s population and influencing 20% of global trade. He praised India’s LVDC leadership as a boost for worldwide clean technology growth.

BIS Director General Pramod Kumar Tiwari emphasized how the bureau links quality standards with young talent through student chapters and internships. As part of the IEC Young Professionals Programme, 93 young experts from around the globe will join workshops, boot camps, and industry visits in India.

The meeting features over 150 technical and management committee sessions to craft next-gen standards. Side events include workshops on sustainability, artificial intelligence, e-mobility, and inclusive growth via standards.

James Wood, IEC’s Director of Communications, called India a “real sustainability champion” and the perfect host. Global surveys back this up, showing strong public backing for green solutions.

The IEC GM Exhibition will host 75 exhibitors, from top industries and associations to buzzing startups. It’s open to the public from September 16 to 19, from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM—entry is free with prior registration. Expect over 2,000 students from schools and colleges to drop by.

At the BIS pavilion, visitors can take a Digital Sustainability Pledge. For each one, BIS will plant a sapling at its offices across India, spreading the message of environmental protection.

Founded in 1906, the IEC leads the charge in international standards for electrical, electronic, and related technologies, backed by a network of 30,000 experts worldwide. This event promises to spark ideas for a greener future—don’t miss out if you’re in Delhi!
