NHRC takes suo motu cognisance after children with pneumonia branded by faith healer in MP

New Delhi, Oct 6 – The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has opened a suo motu case after a media story reported that a faith healer in Jhabua district, Madhya Pradesh, used a hot iron rod to brand three children who were suffering from pneumonia.
Doctors confirmed the children had burn marks and were treated for severe pneumonia. One of the infants is now in critical condition. All three were put on oxygen support, and a girl has been sent to a hospital in Dahod for further care.
The NHRC called the incident a serious human‑rights violation and has demanded a full report from Jhabua’s district magistrate, Neha Meena, and the superintendent of police, Padam Vilochan Shukla. Both officials must respond within two weeks.
Parents reportedly brought the children to the healer, which prompted the attack. Two of the victims are just two‑month‑old babies. After the brandings, their health worsened sharply, forcing an emergency transfer to Jhabua district hospital.
Police in Madhya Pradesh opened an investigation to find out who performed the brandings and where the cases occurred. The NHRC, established under the Protection of Human Rights Act 1993, can act on media reports and public information even without a formal complaint. Its job is to protect human rights—life, liberty, equality and dignity—enforced through Indian courts.
