No arrests in connection with attack on BJP MP Khagen Murmu yet

Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district is rattled after BJP MP Khagen Murmu and MLA Shankar Ghosh were attacked on Monday night while en route to help flood‑affected residents in North Bengal.

No arrests yet, police say

The BJP filed a formal complaint at Nagrakata Police Station on Monday, naming eight suspects: Masum Akhtar, Mohammad Milan, Saibul Haque, Mohammad Sanu, Pinky Begum, Rahul Ansari, Ainul Ansari and Ramzan Alid. The party also staged a protest outside the station and called for urgent action.

“An investigation has begun, but no one has been arrested so far,” a senior police officer from Jalpaiguri told reporters Tuesday. The authorities are looking into the incident, but no suspects are in custody yet.

The attack and injuries

Three hours before the incident, BJP leaders were traveling to a relief convoy when unarmed attackers struck them. Ghosh suffered bruises, while Murmu was hit with serious facial and head injuries. He was rushed to a local health centre, then transferred to a hospital in Siliguri where he is now in stable condition.

Political fallout

The BJP blamed Trinamool Congress (TMC) and sharply criticized Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for failing to protect the MP. In response, the BJP’s Alipurduar MP Manoj Tigga and other party members organized a torch‑lit rally outside Nagrakata Police Station, demanding immediate arrests.

“We gave the police 24 hours. If these Trinamool‑affiliated attackers are not taken into custody, we will be held responsible for law‑and‑order breakdown in the district,” Tigga told the crowd.

National reaction

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) to call the attack “unacceptable” and urged swift action. Mamata Banerjee replied, criticizing the PM’s remarks as political interference.

Current status

While the police continue their inquiry, the political community remains tense. BJP leaders are pressing for swift justice, while TMC defends the accused and disputes the allegations. No arrests have been made, and Khagen Murmu’s health remains a priority for local authorities and his supporters.

The situation remains fluid, with law enforcement and politicians keenly watching the next developments in this high‑profile case.
