West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu took a sharp dig at the central government’s “double-engine” setup on Sunday, pointing out the lack of job opportunities there as a reason why students from other states are flocking to West Bengal for teaching exams.
Speaking to reporters in North 24 Parganas, Basu highlighted how, under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s leadership, exams in the state run smoothly and transparently. “There are no jobs in the double-engine government, so candidates from other states are coming here,” he said. “Under Mamata Banerjee’s guidance, we conduct exams regularly and fairly.”
The buzz is around the School Service Commission (SSC) exam for recruiting Class 9 and 10 teachers, which finally happened on September 7 after a whopping nine-year gap—the last one was back on November 26, 2016. Crowds of hopeful candidates turned up at exam centers across West Bengal for this SSC Exam 2025, all eager for a shot at government teaching jobs.
Security was tight, as Priyabrata Roy, Deputy Commissioner of South Kolkata, explained. “We’ve got everything in place—police at all venues, escorts for question papers, and everyone’s on high alert. No complaints so far, and things are going smoothly. Best wishes to all the candidates!” Roy added.
One candidate, who first tried his luck in the 2016 SSC exam and is back after nearly a decade, shared his nerves: “I’ve prepared fully, but I’m not sure what’ll happen in the hall or afterward. I gave it a go in 2016, and now I’m trying again.”
Another excited aspirant chimed in: “Everyone’s thrilled—this exam hasn’t happened in nine years! We’ve all studied hard and hope for fair results this time. The panel should reward those who’ve prepped for these government teaching jobs properly.”
With thousands chasing stable careers in West Bengal’s education sector, this SSC recruitment drive is a big deal for job seekers eyeing teacher vacancies in state schools.
