India reaffirms commitment to promote peace, stability, development in Afghanistan at UNAMA

India’s Strong Support for Afghanistan: UN Envoy Stresses Peace, Aid, and Anti-Terror Fight

In a recent UN Security Council briefing on Afghanistan, India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni, made it clear that India stands firmly behind efforts to bring peace, stability, and growth to the war-torn country. Speaking on September 18 in New York, he outlined India’s key focus areas, from urgent humanitarian aid to long-term development projects.

Ambassador Parvathaneni kicked off by stressing the need for global teamwork. "We believe international and regional consensus and cooperation are crucial for Afghanistan’s key issues," he said. "India actively engages with all parties to promote peace, stability, and development there." He highlighted India’s top priorities: delivering humanitarian assistance and rolling out capacity-building programs to empower Afghan people.

India also renewed its commitment to the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA). The envoy thanked UNAMA’s head, Roza Otunbayeva, for her updates. "We value her close cooperation and look forward to continuing this with UNAMA," he added.

When a devastating 6.0-magnitude earthquake hit southeastern Afghanistan on September 1, India jumped into action as one of the first responders. The quake killed over 2,000 people and injured more than 3,640, according to reports. Ambassador Parvathaneni shared how India quickly sent 1,000 family tents and 15 tons of food to the hardest-hit areas. They followed up with 21 tons more in relief supplies, including vital medicines, hygiene kits, blankets, and generators. This swift India humanitarian assistance shows the country’s dedication to helping Afghans in crisis.

Looking at broader efforts, India has poured resources into Afghanistan’s development for years. Partnering with the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, India supplied 84 metric tons of medicines and aid, plus 32 metric tons of social support items for drug rehab programs—especially those aiding women. Education is another big focus: Since 2023, India has offered scholarships and fellowships to 2,000 Afghan students, including nearly 600 girls and women, for undergraduate and postgraduate studies.

But peace can’t come without tackling terrorism head-on. Ambassador Parvathaneni urged the world to unite against threats in Afghanistan. "The international community must ensure UN-designated groups like ISIL, Al Qaeda, and their affiliates—including Lashkar-e-Tayyiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed—can’t use Afghan soil for terror anymore," he warned. He also praised Afghanistan’s strong denouncement of the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025, and called for smart strategies to handle post-conflict challenges.

Wrapping up, the envoy pushed for fresh ideas to help Afghanistan’s people. "Afghanistan needs a new approach with untried policy tools to support those in desperate need," he said. "Sticking to business as usual will just keep things the same—and that’s not good for Afghanistan or what the world expects for its people."

India’s ongoing commitment to Afghanistan humanitarian assistance, UN Security Council efforts, and anti-terrorism measures underscores its role as a key player in the region’s stability.
