In the bustling town of Karur, Tamil Nadu, a tragic stampede at a rally for actor-turned-politician Vijay claimed 38 lives on Saturday. The event, organized by his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party, turned chaotic as thousands of fans gathered to see the star, leading to heartbreaking losses and calls for better crowd control.
Eyewitness Nanda Kumar shared his shock with , explaining how the situation spiraled out of hand. “We were right there in the middle of it,” he said. “Nothing could stop the crowd from surging—Vijay was set to arrive at 11 a.m., and word had spread far and wide. But he showed up much later, and tempers flared.” Kumar, who saw families with hungry kids caught in the crush, added, “It’s tough to point fingers. Fans came buzzing with excitement to catch a glimpse of their hero, but delays made everything worse. We just pray the injured pull through and head home soon. These tragedies can’t happen again—event planners need to step up their game.”
He pointed out the sheer scale of the turnout as a key issue. “Even with solid safety setups, what do you do when 10 or 15 times more people show up than planned? That’s a huge oversight,” Kumar said. He urged the Tamil Nadu government to offer strong support to victims’ families.
Another onlooker, Suriya, described the rescue nightmare. “Ambulances couldn’t even squeeze through the throng,” he told . “There was zero room to move, and it took ages to get people out safely.”
Zakir, a relative of one victim, echoed the pain while speaking to about the Karur stampede’s root causes. “Vijay was expected at 9 a.m., but the delay built a massive crowd, especially near Thirukoilure with loads of young people, women, and kids,” he said. “Bringing families to these rallies is risky—it’s devastating to see the fallout up close.”
Actor Vijay, TVK chief, quickly expressed his devastation on X (formerly Twitter). “My heart breaks into pieces; I’m in agony that’s too deep for words,” he wrote. “I send my deepest condolences to the families of those we lost in Karur. Praying for a quick recovery for everyone hurt and getting treatment.” The incident has sparked urgent talks on rally safety in Tamil Nadu as investigations continue.
