NSG forensic expert team visits Nowgam blast site in Kashmir

The blast at the nowgam police station in Jammu and Kashmir rocked the region on Friday night, killing nine people and wounding 31 others. Police had brought explosive material seized from a Faridabad case to the station for samplings. A sharp burst at about 11:20 p.m. sent shock waves through the building and caused the tragic accident.

Earlier on Sunday, a forensic team from the National Security Guard (NSG) arrived to help investigate the explosion. The NSG squad worked with the local forensic office and police officers, taking samples and reviewing the scene. Its experts are looking for clues to the explosion’s cause and will keep the local team updated.

The victims include a police inspector, a Naib Tehsildar, a revenue department chowkidar, a local tailor, three forensic laboratory staff, and two crime‑branch photographers. The 31 injured ranged from police personnel to local residents. The incident followed the police’s routine handling of the seized explosives, but an unexpected detonation took many lives.

Lt Governor Manoj Sinha ordered a formal inquiry and condemned the tragedy. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, former chief ministers Dr. Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti all expressed deep sorrow. The Jammu and Kashmir government announced compensation: ₹10 lakh for each victim’s next of kin and ₹1 lakh for those injured.

Hundreds joined the funeral processions for the deceased, and senior police officials visited grieving families to offer condolences and support. A wreath‑laying ceremony on Saturday honored the martyred officers, led by Lt Governor Sinha, the DG of NSG, the Director General of Police in J&K, and other senior civil and police officials.
