In Bhubaneswar on Tuesday, lawmakers in the Odisha Assembly voted together to approve a package of bills that lift the pay and benefits of House members to more than three‑times their former levels.
Starting from June 5, 2024, the new figures apply back‑dated to ensure the hike is effective immediately. The increase spans every major post in the Assembly – from the Chief Minister down to the Deputy Whips – and even provides higher pensions and allowances for former legislators.
A House representative’s base salary has jumped from ₹35,000 to ₹90,000 each month, while the “sumptuary” allowance swells from ₹40,000 to ₹98,000. Other benefits, such as travel, constituency visits, Lok Seva Bhawan use, and medical costs, also see sizable boosts. For ex‑MLAs, the combined pension and extra allowances reach roughly ₹1.17 lakh a month.
The Chief Minister will now earn ₹3.74 lakh a month—a mix of ₹1 lakh base pay, ₹1.83 lakh sumptuary stipend, and ₹91,000 for car use. Other top office‑holders will take home between ₹3.50 lakh and ₹3.68 lakh per month, depending on their specific role.
All four bills were introduced and passed on a unanimous roll call, with no opposition in the chamber. Senior BJD figure Pramila Mallik, whose role is party chief whip, praised the reform as a means to help former legislators meet their social and financial demands. BJP MLA Om Prakash Mishra also backed the change, calling it a overdue step for the state’s lawmakers.
