Odisha: BJD names ex-minister Snehangini Chhuria as its candidate for Nuapada bypoll
Bhubaneswar, Oct. 15 – Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leader Naveen Patnaik chose veteran politician Snehangini Chhuria as the party’s candidate for the Nuapada Assembly by‑poll that will take place on November 11.
Patnaik, who has been Chief Minister of Odisha before, announced the decision in a press meeting. “Snehangini Chhuria has served our party with courage and has always fought for the poor, women, and the downtrodden. She was a key minister in the past and is a strong leader from Western Odisha,” Patnaik said. “That is why we are nominating her for the Nuapada by‑election.”
He also pledged the party’s full support and confirmed that he would visit Nuapada to rally voters behind Chhuria.
Chhuria, a two‑time member of the legislative assembly, thanked Patnaik for the trust. “I have worked for our party and for the people of Odisha,” she said. “I’m honoured to stand again for Nuapada. I’m confident the people will give us a decisive win.” She added that the BJD would defeat any opponents and that “truth will triumph over falsehood.”
Other parties are preparing their own candidates. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has chosen Jay Dholakia, son of late BJD figure Rajendra Dholakia, whose seat became vacant after his father’s death on September 8. In a separate move, the Congress has nominated Ghasiram Majhi, a tribal leader, to contest the same spot.
The by‑poll in Nuapada is expected to test the popularity of the BJD, BJP, and Congress in southwestern Odisha in the run‑up to the next state elections. The race will be watched closely by political observers, as the result could reshape the balance of power in the Odisha assembly.
